MS did run a separate set of communities for the Office for Mac applications, but seems to have rolled those into the more general MS Office set recently. So from the information provided to date, it appears the issue is limited to MS Word documents being opened by Word. The spreadsheet sent you is probably an MS Excel document, which would be opened by Excel, not Word.
I wasn't having any trouble with photos or the spreadsheet, just my tons of documents. It worked fine, documents opened to the right size, until a month or so ago. Photos from a camera using the 'standard' 2:3 aspect ratio inherited from 35mm film will come close to filling the available vertical space, and use only as much width to fit the full image. This Word for Mac was bought around 2008, used for a second time with my second (current) Apple laptop. The display size of photos and PDF files in Preview depends on the size and shape of the image. I'm going to request your question be transferred to the OS X Yosemite community, where it will reach a more general audience in terms of applications, and a more specific one in terms of possible OS issues.
